How to prepare a brief for a WordPress website redesign

A clear redesign brief gets you a better quote, a faster kickoff, and a website you actually want at the end. Here is what to include.

  1. Audit what is not working on your current site
Write down the specific pages, flows, and features that frustrate you or your customers. Screenshots and Google Analytics data both help.
  2. Define measurable goals for the redesign
Not "make it look better" — pick real numbers. "Increase enquiry-form submissions by 30%", "reduce mobile bounce rate below 55%", "cut page load below 2 seconds." Measurable goals shape design decisions.
  3. Gather 3–5 sites you admire and note why
Reference sites tell an agency more about your taste than any brief document. Include the URL and one sentence per site explaining what you like — the layout, the tone, the colour, the interaction.
  4. List required functionality and integrations
Contact forms, e-commerce, booking, member area, gated content, CRM sync, accounting integration — anything the site needs to do or connect to.
  5. Confirm your budget range and target launch date
A budget range (not a single number) lets the agency scope realistically. Even a rough range is more useful than "we'll see what it costs." Launch dates drive scope trade-offs.
  6. Send the brief and book a discovery call
A written brief plus a 30-minute call is enough to get an accurate quote within 2–3 working days.

FAQs

When should I consider redesigning my website?

If your site is more than 4 to 5 years old, loads slowly on mobile, does not match your current brand, or is not generating leads and sales, it is time. Other triggers: a change in business direction, launching new products, or CMS end-of-life (Joomla, old Drupal, legacy Wix).

Will a redesign affect my current search rankings?

Done properly, a redesign improves rankings. We audit your current SEO before starting, preserve every ranking URL with 301 redirects, keep or improve on your existing meta data and internal linking, and often see traffic climb within 60 days of launch.

Can you keep my existing content and just refresh the design?

Yes. A “reskin” redesign keeps your content and structure while giving the site a modern visual layer. This is the fastest and cheapest redesign option — usually 3 to 5 weeks — and works well when the content and SEO are already strong.

How much does a website redesign cost?

A visual reskin on an existing platform starts at R25,000. A full redesign with new content strategy, custom design, and rebuild typically runs R50,000 to R120,000 depending on page count and functionality. We quote fixed prices after a discovery call.

Do I need to change my hosting or CMS during a redesign?

Not necessarily. We will audit your current hosting and CMS as part of the discovery phase and only recommend a change if it is holding the site back. If your hosting is fine and WordPress is a fit, we redesign in place.
