How to launch a WooCommerce store in South Africa
Launching a South African WooCommerce store means integrating local payment gateways, courier providers, and tax rules. Here is the sequence that works.
- Register your business and open a business bank account
Most SA payment gateways require a registered business (Pty Ltd, sole prop, or NPO) and a business bank account before they will settle funds to you. - Choose your payment gateways
For South Africa we integrate PayFast, Yoco, Peach Payments, Ozow, Stripe, and Netcash. Most stores support 2–3 gateways so customers can pick the one they trust. - Choose your shipping providers
The Courier Guy, Aramex, Bob Go (Shiplogic), Fastway, and Pargo are the main options. Integrate rate lookups, waybill generation, and tracking updates directly into WooCommerce checkout. - Prepare product data and images
Product titles, SKUs, prices (VAT-inclusive), descriptions, categories, tags, and consistent product photography. Bulk-upload via CSV once the data is clean. - Configure VAT and tax settings
Turn on WooCommerce tax, set the SA VAT rate (currently 15%), enable "prices include tax", and configure tax classes for zero-rated items if you sell any. - Build, test, and launch on a staging site
Every checkout scenario tested end-to-end on staging: card, EFT, Ozow instant EFT, refunds, partial refunds, shipping calculation for every province. Only then push live.
FAQs
Why WooCommerce over Shopify for a South African store?
WooCommerce gives you full ownership of your store, no monthly platform fees, no transaction fees, and works cleanly with South African payment gateways and courier plugins. Shopify is easier out of the box but locks you into a platform, a subscription, and a transaction fee on every sale.
Can you integrate with South African payment gateways like PayFast and Yoco?
Yes — PayFast, Yoco, Peach Payments, Ozow, and Stripe are all standard integrations. We also set up EFT/manual payment options with automated confirmation emails for buyers who prefer bank transfer.
Do you set up delivery, shipping rules, and courier integration?
Yes. We configure shipping zones for South Africa (main centres vs regional vs outlying), integrate with couriers like The Courier Guy, Aramex, and Bob Go, and set up rules for free shipping thresholds, bulky items, and click-and-collect.
Can WooCommerce handle a large product catalogue?
Yes. WooCommerce comfortably runs stores with tens of thousands of products when the hosting, database, and search are configured properly. We tune the site specifically for the size and complexity of your catalogue.
Do you provide training on managing orders and products?
Yes. Training covers adding and editing products, managing stock, processing orders, issuing refunds, handling customer accounts, and pulling sales reports. We also set up email notifications so your team knows the moment an order lands.
